Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Purnima or simply Rakhi is a Hindu festival celebrated in India. It seals the bond of unfathomable love between siblings and honors the meaning of brother-sister relationship. This festival is celebrated in the month of Sharavan on a full moon day. This year this festival falls on the auspicious day of 18 August, when it will be celebrated to honor the love and bond of siblings.
In India the festival of Rakhi is celebrated by people of different religions, caste, creed or region. Indians living abroad also celebrate this with the same enthusiasm. It is a very important festival. The spirit of celebration has become much colorful and lively in the present day. In other words Raksha Bandhan is no less than a grand celebration as it strengths the relationship and brings in the feeling of love and togetherness between siblings.
On the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan as per ritual, the sister ties the sacred colorful thread on the brother’s wrist and prays for his wellness and goodwill, the brother also pledges to look after the sister for the rest of his life and showers her with amazing gifts. On this day siblings exchange gifts and seal their love for one another. Gifts can be anything, just a box of chocolates or something very expensive like jewelry, it is the love and respect that accompanies it which adds that extra value.
Everyone starts preparing for this festival in advance, there are rakhis being sold in advance so if you have to send it to a brother living far away you can do so. All the shops display their wares may it be sweets, garments, gift items; you name it and you find it. The celebration of Rakhi, in India, is well known for its carnival spirit and strengthening the bond of love between brothers and sisters. Celebrated with different rituals, family get- together and sweets, Rakhi is about sentiments, love and enjoyment.
Like any other festival Rakhi has its own unique significance. Rabindranath Tagore started gathering people for ‘Rakhi Mahostavas’ in Shantiniketan to propogate the feeling of brotherhood amongst people. He believed this will infuse the feeling of trust and of peaceful coexistence. Raksha Bandhan is a way for them to harmonize the relationship of humanity. The tradition continues as people tie rakhis to neighbors and friends.
To sum it up, it is the sentiments that matter and not the expensive gifts, it is whether you honor these emotions and value the love and sentiments. It is a great way to show your love for your sibling and to let them know you are always there.
