Meerut did not make it to the smart city list in the first round, later the U.P, government selected Meerut as one of the 13 contenders from U.P. for the smart city project. Now the million dollar question is if Meerut will pass the test and if it is ready to be a ‘smart city’.
The smart city project is aimed at the creation of an urban space that is ecologically friendly, technologically integrated and meticulously planned. It will focus on the use of information technology to improve efficiency. In a smart city economic development and activity will be ecologically sustainable.
Meerut is a part of the NCR, it is a leader in production of sports goods and jewelry business, yet it is backwards in many things. It lacks proper infrastructure and safe transport facilities. But Meerut can have a whole new outlook if it becomes a smart city.
Second Largest City in NCR- Though Meerut is the second largest city in the NCR after Delhi, it has crumbling infrastructure, poor transport, law and order conditions are poor but at the same time it has good business generating from the city. By becoming a smart city all these woes will disappear and the city will really be able to hold on its own.
Smart Environment- Besides being the second largest city in the NCR, it also spearheaded the green revolution in the1970’s and with bumper crops of sugarcane and potatoes paved way for setting of many sugar mills and food processing plants in this area. The trade of frozen meat flourishes in this area and many international brands of frozen meat belong to this area.
Smart Economy- The city is well known for its sports goods, especially world class cricket brands like, SG, SS and BDM, have originated from this walled city. Engineering industry is another emerging commerce in this city.
Meerut is a city where a large number of educational institutes are flourishing and with a lot of development on the way the city will be seeing a good amount of good infrastructure. People here want a good, healthy lifestyle so a lot of residential projects are also coming up. If it becomes a smart city it will generate its own economy and there will be enough jobs created for the people.
Meerut stands tough on the five pillars of a smart city concept, i.e. smart economy, smart living, smart mobility, smart environment and smart people, and all it needs is smart governance. Meerut is a good option for a smart city and by becoming one it will change the fate of the city and its people.
