Living upstairs and downstairs both have their pros and cons. In a city like Mumbai, all you can think of is going up because the city can only grow upwards with its skyscrapers. Higher apartments are more attractive and lucrative from investors’ and owners’ point of view. Even tenants prefer higher apartments.Ground floor apartments come with that little extra garden area. If you have ageing seniors in your family, easily accessible downstairs apartments would be good. Secondly, a ground floor apartment offers more privacy. Even if you have noisy kids who keep running around the house all the time, there is nobody living beneath your floor to complain about it. On the other hand, living upstairs offers you a good view if you live in a suburb or seaside. Besides, you have more security, good lighting and ventilation.

The bottom-line is that any place you occupy within the building has its own set of risks and benefits. One major problem faced by those living on the top is overheating during summers and probable leaks during rains. You will also regret living on the top every time the elevator breaks down. Not that downstairs is any better. If your apartment is in a low lying area, water clogging and flooding can be common occurrences.

Even if you live in the middle, you will still face problems like leaks from above, probably a faucet left running, noises from above and around, etc. So, any floor you choose has its own positive and negative points. So you need to see the location, apartment orientation, etc. Then weigh the pros and cons keeping in mind your financial status, family needs and conveniences.
